Old Fashioned Thanksgiving Apple Cobbler

Nothing says comfort like a warm, bubbling Apple Cobbler fresh out of the oven. With tender spiced apples and a buttery, cake-like topping, this classic American dessert is simple to make and perfect for fall baking, holidays (Thanksgiving), or weeknight sweet cravings. Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a real crowd-pleaser on a cold fall or winter day.

  • 12 servings
  • 20 min prep
  • 60 min cook

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoon Unsalted Butter
  • 8 cup Peeled Sliced Granny Smith Apples (1/4 inch slice)
  • 8 cup Peeled Sliced Gala Apples (1/4 inch slice)
  • 3 tablespoon Packed Brown Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice
  • 1 tablespoon All Purpose Flour
  • 1½ teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon Ground Allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 6 tablespoon Unsalted Butter (melted)
  • 1 cup White Sugar
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1¾ cup All Purpose Flour
  • 2 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Ground Cinnamon

Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Melt 2 Tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the apple slices, brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, and spices. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes, or until the apples are coated and begin to soften. Transfer apple filling to the prepared baking pan.
  3. Whisk the melted butter and sugar together in a medium bowl. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, flour, baking powder, and salt, and whisk until combined and mostly smooth. Pour and spread the batter over the apples. Sprinkle cinnamon evenly over the top.
  4. Bake on the centre rack for 50-55 minutes or until the topping is golden and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges. Remove from the oven, place on a cooling rack, and allow to cool for at least 5 minutes before serving.
  5. Serve warm, room temperature, or cold, on its own or topped with vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce.
