Read the same recipe as a web page, a step-by-step cook mode, a 4x6 notecard, a flowchart, or a vertical rails chart.
Every recipe in Platefolio can be read in several formats. They show the same recipe, so you can switch as often as you like and nothing about the recipe changes. Try them here:

The formats
- Traditional: a clean recipe page, with the photo, ingredients and steps. Every recipe can use it.
- Cook mode: made for cooking from a phone or tablet. Tick off ingredients, then go one step at a time. Your ticks are saved, so you can come back to them.
- Notecard: an old-fashioned 4x6 recipe card that you can print. Longer recipes use the front and back.
- Flowchart: a chart in the style of Cooking for Engineers. Ingredients come in on the left, get combined step by step, and end at the finished dish, so you can see the whole recipe at a glance.
- Rails: the same chart as the flowchart, turned to run top to bottom so it fits a phone screen.
Switch formats
Open a recipe and pick a tile above it. Platefolio remembers your choice for that recipe, so it opens in the same format next time.
A star (★) on a tile marks your household’s default format.
Set the default for every recipe
Open the account menu, choose Settings, and pick a format under Default Recipe View. Recipes open in that format unless you’ve picked a different one for that recipe. If you share a household, only its owner can change this.
A cookbook can have its own format, too. A recipe opened from that cookbook uses the cookbook’s format.
Why a format is greyed out
Not every recipe fits every format, so a tile is greyed out when it can’t show that recipe well, with a short reason underneath.
- Notecard is greyed out when a recipe is too long for a 4x6 card, even using both sides.
- Flowchart and Rails need to know which steps feed into which. Platefolio works that out when you save a recipe, so a recipe that hasn’t been saved since it was added may need saving once.
