Type a recipe in

Add a recipe by hand, with ingredient groups, steps, times and a photo.

Typing a recipe in is always free and unlimited. Choose + New recipe to open the recipe form. Only a Title is required, so you can save a rough version and fill it in later.

Ingredients

Each ingredient row has boxes marked qty, to, unit and ingredient. Choose Add ingredient for another row, and use the arrows to reorder them. Leave to empty for a single amount. For a range like “2 to 3 cloves”, put 2 in qty and 3 in to.

If a recipe has parts, like a cake and its frosting, give those ingredients a group, such as “For the frosting”. Ingredients in the same group are listed together under that heading. Groups also help Platefolio work out the recipe’s flowchart.

Steps

Write one step per box, in order. Choose Add step for another, and use the arrows to reorder them. Shorter steps suit more formats: a short recipe fits on a notecard, and cook mode shows one step at a time.

Times and servings

Fill in Prep time (min) and Cook time (min), and Total time (min) is added up for you. If you only know the total, leave the other two empty and type the total in.

A photo

Under Photo, choose an image. Crop and rotate it, then choose Use this photo. Then click the part of the photo that matters most, like the dish itself. That spot stays in view wherever the photo is cropped, such as in your recipe list.

Categories

Categories, like “Dinner” or “Baking”, are labels you can filter your recipes by. A recipe can have as many as you like. Start typing in Add a category and pick one from the list. If it doesn’t exist yet, choose the Create option at the bottom of the list to make it on the spot.

Platefolio asks before saving a recipe with no category. Choose Save anyway if you meant it, or Back to add one.

To rename or delete categories, go to Settings, under Recipe Categories. See Categories.

Cookbooks

A cookbook is a collection you put together on purpose, in your own order, like “Holiday baking” or “Grandma’s recipes”. Type in Add to a cookbook to pick one, or create a new one the same way as a category. A recipe added here goes at the end of the cookbook, and you can reorder it from the cookbook itself. On the free Line Cook plan you can make 1 cookbook. See Cookbooks.

Everything else

When you’re done, choose Save recipe. To change it later, open the recipe and edit it.
